Wadi Rum Desert is a must-visit spot if you happen to be in Jordan.
Wadi Rum is located in the south part Jordan and is a very well-protected desert. Apart from that, it is also called as the Valley of Moon due to its red and pink-colored sand hills as well as its primitive rocks that literally turn the whole place into a card-postal-like scenery.
If you really wish to live the desert experience you should definitely spend the night at this unique place. You can choose among several options; from Basic and Traditional Bedouin Camps to luxurious, full of comforts Camps as well as Bedouins’ tent houses that are always open for your best hospitality.
The majority of visitors usually chooses the famous Bedouin Camps where you can enjoy full meals and the - traditionally made - afternoon tea. Each Station can offer you a unique overnight experience, literally, in the middle of the desert that is above anyone’s imagination. In fact, Wadi Rum is what anyone expects to hear about an ordinary desert; extremely hot temperatures in summer and low ones during winter.
It is a desert which is both a home to Bedouins who live there and a challenge to those who are to visit it.
At first, you might consider all the Camps similar to each other. However, they’re not. There are some perfectly organized and luxurious camps that are really worth your attention! Their luxury of course, does not affect the traditional lifestyle of Bedouins; instead, it enhances it with contemporary details and elements that travelers tend to ask for even more nowadays in order to get a safe and comfortable trip.
I happened to be there in November; the great day temperature and the beautiful sunset that I enjoyed here finally led me to an overnight at the best Luxurious Bedouin desert Camp - the Sun City Camp. The peaceful desert scenery along with the locals’ warm welcoming made just perfect my first visit to this amazing land.
What is more, the simplicity of Bedouins’ life at their valley, the charming scenery and the high level of both accommodation and service made me even more surprised and excited about my trip!
In Sun City Camp, you can choose among various accommodation options; Traditional Bedouins’ tents or royal ones, family suites and of course, Martian Dome, the treasure of desert at which I spend my night. Martian Dome combines both the contemporary style and the comfort every visitor needs with an original desert overnight experience, full of luxurious moments!
When I arrived at the Camp late at night, I did not get the chance to see a lot.
However, I had one of my best life experiences; I enjoyed a traditional meal at the restaurant where I also had fun with a Traditional Jordanian Show on the outside part of the restaurant! The local Bedouins were dancing to their local rhythms and dances of Jordan, giving us the total Jordanian way of life!
The Camp provides a big restaurant which is in fact, located in a big Martian tent that is like a Hollywoodian one. This is where you will be able to enjoy the freshet dishes of a wide food and tastes’ variety, all being served at its huge buffet.

So, I did not have the chance to see a lot of things during the night yet one thing was pretty clear to me; the desert “chilliness” around 3a.m. That was when I said to myself that I was literally having a real desert experience! The next morning, I was just staring at the sunrise on a camel with the company of a local Bedouin. The Sunrise Camel Tour is something that can be easily arranged by the Camp; so, you can make the deal as well if you visit it.
As I re-think about it, I only have countless feelings for this life-changing experience especially for this morning that I was going around the Valley of Moon on the back of a camel! This is the time when I realize that details do matter and “a bed on its own is not enough”. We always need to take a look at the whole picture and not forget to live in it.
Disclaimer: My trip was organised in collaboration with Ryanair, which flies directly from Athens to Aqaba twice a week, and additionally with Jordan Tourism Board. I would really like to thank our tour quide Issa and our driver Fatem for thw unique experiences we had together! All opinions are my own, as always.
