Solo traveler, or not?
They say traveling is like a lifelong learning university. It’s like a school that has a lot to teach. They also say that if you succeed in traveling alone is like receiving a Master’s degree. You struggle with yourself, you get to know yourself, and you get to know a world you did not know existed.
I consider myself a lucky person. I love my job, which is unfortunately a rare thing. I don’t lose my temper easily, and I don’t get bored. Flying gives me energy, and I find it hard to imagine how my life would be without it. I’ve studied Economics, but I found myself studying in the best university – the university of Life.
I never stop traveling, getting to know the world, getting to know myself, and this blog is my own graduation certificate. I’ve seen myself countless times, traveling solo, wandering the cities, eating, drinking, learning. But is it actually easy traveling alone, you might wonder.
I’d say it takes courage, risk, and lots of imagination.
I’d say it takes courage, risk, and lots of imagination.
Can you imagine yourself wandering through the Ηutongs of Beijing, together with a tour guide on a two-seat bicycle driven by a local? In and out of New Jersey buses, until you reach Upper Manhattan to start your walk? Sleeping for hours in an airport waiting for the morning flight? Walking into a Parisian restaurant full of couples in love and enjoying a glass of wine alone? Solving Sudoku puzzles on the beach of Mahe in Seychelles, with only a three-legged dog for company? Riding a cab in Shanghai for three hours because the driver, who dreams of crabs, lost his way due to miscommunication?
If you can imagine yourself even in just one of these situations, rest assured that you could find yourself in all. While traveling, you should first be able to manage on your own. People who buy a city guide and a map, follow to-do or must-see lists, and never talk to the locals, are never good travel companions.
While traveling, you need to free yourself, become one with the place, get to know the place, and forget about lists. If you learn to get around on your own, you will become your own best companion. Plus, you’ll notice that your standards will change afterwards; you will start choosing your travel companions differently.
Good company makes a good trip, but not the opposite. Keep that in mind.
